Orthodontic Emergencies

h-braces5.jpgAs your San Antonio orthodontist who understands just how important it is to have a straight, healthy and attractive smile, Dr. Bebe uses the latest orthodontic technology to provide her patients with exceptional orthodontic care. This allows our practice to provide each patient we serve with safe and effective treatment for amazing results.

However, problems can occur with your braces and it is important to be prepared on what  to do when these problems arise. If you have a broken appliance or are experiencing unusual pain which you cannot control, please call our Universal City or San Antonio office right away so we can do our best to schedule an appointment for you. Even if you have an appointment scheduled with us, call us immediately if you need a repair done to your orthodontic appliances so your treatment stays on track.

Most problems patients have with their braces can be handled right at home. While you wait for your upcoming appointment, the following guidelines will help you resolve minor problems. It's important to know that even if you've alleviated the pain you were feeling caused by a broken appliance, you will still need to set up a repair appointment so we can repair or replace what has broken.

Handling Common Problems With Your Braces

Lost Separator

It is common to lose a separator, so don't panic if this happens to you. Just call our San Antonio or Universal City office to let us know and we'll tell you whether or not it needs to be replaced.

Soreness or Discomfort

It is common to feel some soreness or discomfort now and then while wearing braces. For instance, when you have your braces first placed on your teeth by Dr. Bebe, some soreness and discomfort is normal as you begin your orthodontic treatment process. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever like acetaminophen or another non-aspirin product according to the package directions to help alleviate any discomfort you're feeling while you become used to wearing your orthodontic appliances.

Gargling with lukewarm salt water can also help. Just mix one teaspoon of salt in lukewarm water until it dissolves and swish it around your mouth. Another effective method for controlling discomfort and soreness is to place a warm washcloth or heating pad over the sore area to reduce discomfort.

Irritating Wires

If a wire is causing irritation, try to gently move it away from the area using a cotton swab or a clean pencil eraser. If this doesn't work, you can cover the irritating wire end with a small piece of cotton or dental wax. If the wire is causing you quite a bit of discomfort or pain, you can clip the end off using nail clippers or scissors that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol.

Loose Bracket

If a bracket loosens, call us to see if you need an appointment to have the bracket re-fitted. If a situation arises in which you need to cut a wire or slide a bracket off a wire, you can use clean fingernail clippers that have been sterilized in alcohol. Then give our office a call on the next business day to set up a repair appointment.

Loose Wire

If a wire loosens, try to put it back in place using tweezers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. If you need to cut the wire, do so using fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol.

Problems with Your Headgear

If your headgear is causing you pain, it could be because you have not worn it long enough. Be sure to follow the instructions the orthodontist gave you regarding how many hours per day you should wear your headgear. If the facebow has become bent, do not attempt to adjust it yourself. Instead, call our office for an appointment.
