Dr. Bebe and our highly trained team of orthodontic specialists work hard to get to know all our patients individually, and we strive to craft specialized treatment plans to perfectly suit every patient's unique orthodontic needs. But as much as we love the orthodontic treatment process, we know that most patients have an unequivocal favorite moment: getting their braces off.

Retaining Your Smile

Trust us: when you get your braces off, we know how excited you'll be - and we're happy for you! It's always wonderful to see the look of pure joy on patients' faces once they get their braces off, and it always feels like a major milestone to see their brand new, beautiful smile. But hold on, because you're not out of the woods yet: now begins the retention phase, one of the most important parts of treatment.

Although your teeth are in new positions after your braces, the underlying bone and ligament structure supporting them has yet to "set" into place, and without a retainer, your teeth will just move back to their old positions, erasing your hard work! That's why it's paramount to follow your retainer instructions carefully, wearing them for the necessary amounts of time and taking care to brush and clean them properly. Use your retainers well, and your new smile will last you the rest of your life!

Types of Retainers

Retainers come in a few different varieties, each with its own unique set of benefits and drawbacks. Here's a rundown of the retainers we use at the practice:

  • Hawley: This is by far the most common type. It's a removable retainer made from metal wires and a sturdy acrylic material, and it's custom manufactured to fit your mouth and keep your teeth in their proper positions. We can even personalize the acrylic with a variety of fun colors and patterns! Cleaning is straightforward: just brush the retainer as you would your teeth anytime you take it out of your mouth.
  • Fixed: A bonded lingual retainer, or fixed retainer, is an excellent and highly effective way to retain your smile. Unlike the removable Hawley, fixed retainers are cemented directly to the inside surface of your lower canines, so you'll never  is my have to worry about wearing them enough. Cleaning is veryimportant - when brushing, carefully clean both the inside of your lower teeth and the wire. If any part of your retainer breaks during treatment, be sure to call us as soon as possible so we can schedule you an appointment.
  • Essix: Essix retainers are removable like Hawleys, but they fit directly over the arch of the teeth - similar to Invisalign. Essix retainers have no metal wires, are almost invisible, and provide a durable, inexpensive, and easy to use retention system.
