Five questions to ask an orthodontist about Invisalign

The following are a few questions and answers that orthodontists often come across regarding Invisalign treatment. Read on to find out more!

1. How does Invisalign work?

This orthodontic treatment works to straighten the teeth all at once, unlike traditional braces. Invisalign is simply a clear aligner that can be worn over the top set of teeth or the bottom, or both! As the patient wears the aligner, the teeth will be forced to shift into a more even position.

2. Does Invisalign hurt?

All orthodontic treatments tend to induce some discomfort in the mouth because the teeth are being forced to shift. However, this isn’t necessarily painful. Instead, the patient may feel some soreness within their teeth and gums.

3. How long will the treatment last?

When asking an orthodontist how long Invisalign treatment will last, the answer will vary. Each patient has different teeth which means that there is no standard for how long treatment may be necessary. Some patients need to wear the aligners for just a few months, while others are required to wear them for over a year. An orthodontist can evaluate the teeth and provide an estimate as to how long treatment may be necessary, but again this will vary depending on the progression and the person.

4. Is Invisalign less effective than braces?

Nope! Invisalign is much newer than traditional braces but that doesn’t mean that it is any less effective. Each person is different, meaning some may benefit more from Invisalign versus traditional braces, or vice versa. Ultimately, an orthodontist will be able to help the patient decide whether Invisalign is right for them.

5. Do I have to wear Invisalign all the time?

For the most part, yes. The aligners should be worn for at least 22-23 hours a day. They should only be taken out for eating or oral hygiene. It is important for Invisalign to be worn as often as possible so that it can do its job of correcting the teeth.
