Braces vs Invisalign

When it comes to orthodontic treatment methods, two of the most popular orthodontic appliances used today are conventional braces and Invisalign. While both of these treatment methods work in the same basic way by applying consistent pressure to the teeth to move the teeth into the desired position, there are several key differences between the two. Below is a brief comparison between San Antonio braces and Invisalign which can help you decide which treatment method you’d prefer to ask Dr. Bebe about at your first visit with us.

Conventional braces feature stainless steel brackets which are cemented to the teeth for the entire treatment process. A thin archwire runs through the brackets to help move the teeth into the position Dr. Bebe carefully plans out. Braces can be used to correct several types of problems with the teeth including moderate to severe crowding, crookedness, alignment issues, and protrusions.

When you’re wearing regular braces, you will need to to visit our office every few weeks so that Dr. Bebe can adjust/tighten the archwire. These adjustments can cause some tightness and mild discomfort, although this typically improves in a few days following these appointments.

It is very important that good oral hygiene is practiced when you have braces bonded to your teeth as there are many places for food debris and plaque to collect. And throughout the course of treatment with regular braces, it is essential not to eat certain foods that can bend, damage, or break your appliances like hard, sticky, chewy, and gooey foods.

Treatment time with regular braces varies from one person to the next with some cases requiring less than six to eight months and others requiring two or more years.

Invisalign consists of a sequence of finely-calibrated, clear removable aligner trays which fit snugly over the teeth. Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks before the patient moves on to the next set in the series. As the patient moves from one set of aligners to the next, the teeth are gradually moving, step-by-step until they are in the final position which was carefully planned out by Dr. Bebe.

Since the aligners are removable, they’re to be taken out when eating and when brushing and flossing. This means there are no food restrictions to be concerned with nor any worries about changing your oral hygiene routine. And since the aligners are transparent, they are virtually invisible, making treatment with Invisalign very discreet.

It is absolutely necessary that the aligners are worn for at least 22 hours each day. This means that every patient choosing this treatment method must be 100% sure they can be compliant with wearing their aligners.

Invisalign can be used to treat malocclusion (bad bites) which are mild to moderate in complexity. But since the aligners do not offer your orthodontist as much control in creating some types of tooth movements, Invisalign is not considered a good treatment option for cases involving severely rotated teeth, teeth that are severely angled, large spaces between teeth or severe overbites or open bites.

Like regular braces, treatment time with Invisalign varies from one patient to the next. However, the average treatment time with removable aligners is around one year.
