Essential Tools for Cleaning Your Braces

If you're just getting started with wearing your braces, then congratulations: you're starting on a journey towards a gorgeous new smile that'll last a lifetime! But you'll need to be careful, as the care you take of your appliances during the orthodontic treatment period is critical to the success of your treatment. At UC Orthodontics, we want to make every part of treatment easier – so here's a list of 6 useful tools you need to keep your braces clean.

The Best Tools To Clean Braces

Oral hygiene is fundamental to the success of your treatment, and that means keeping your braces as clean as possible. Use these tools to keep your teeth and braces clean and healthy throughout your treatment:

  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste (Regular & Travel Size): Nothing is more important than brushing and flossing, and having a good soft bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste is critical to that. You may also want to consider getting a travel-sized toothbrush to keep your braces clean while you're on the go.
  • Floss Threaders: Flossing is crucial to oral health, and you'll need a floss threader to floss underneath the archwire of your braces.
  • Waterpik: If a floss threader is too difficult, a waterpik can be a helpful tool in cleaning your teeth. This device shoots a pressurized jet of water between the teeth, acting as an automatic form of flossing.
  • Fluoride Mouthwash: Your teeth need extra help to stay healthy while wearing braces, so adding a fluoridated mouthwash to your regimen during treatment is a great idea.
  • Interdental Toothbrush: An interdental toothbrush, also called a proxabrush, is a small, pine tree-shaped toothbrush that helps you clean under archwires and dislodge food. These are quite small, so they make great on the go cleaning implements.
  • Dental Picks: Almost like a heavy duty toothpick, dental picks are great tools for dislodging food and cleaning braces while you're out and about.
