April is National Facial Protection Month. As we return to outdoor sports and other activities, April is an appropriate time to remind you about the importance of taking a few precautions to preserve your teeth and be protected from dental and facial injuries. Whether at a practice, at a game, or simply enjoying some fun in the neighborhood, it's important to play it safe. That is why we here at UC Smiles Orthodontics would like to remind everyone of the importance of wearing the proper protection when playing in sports and other physical activities.

Here we have a short list of tools and equipment that can help you when protecting your face.

  • Wear a mouthguard when playing contact sports. Mouth guards can help prevent injury to a person's teeth, mouth, and jaw, and they are significantly less expensive than the cost to repair an injury. Some injuries can reach tens of thousands of dollars over the course of a lifetime, so spend a few dollars on a mouthguard now, and save later. We all can follow the good example of MLB All-Star pitcher Patrick Corbin, who has been noted to have worn his mouth guard every time he takes to the mound.
  • Wear a helmet. Helmets absorb the energy of impact and help prevent damage to the head. This is a no brainer, and if you do not have a brain, it's probably because you were not wearing a helmet.
  • Wear protective eyewear. Eyes are extremely vulnerable to damage, especially when playing sports. Be sure to keep a look out for dangerous situations.
  • Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin. Hockey pucks, basketballs, and racquetballs can cause severe facial damage at any age. Shield your face, win first place.

Now since we are an orthodontic practice, let's talk a little more about mouth guards. It's important to get one that is properly fitted to your mouth and will not get in the way of any orthodontic treatment. In order to make sure you receive the right type of mouth guard, please feel free to call our office and set up an appointment.
