The Benefits of Early Orthodontic Care

UC Smiles Orthodontics ensures that patients of all ages receive the orthodontic care they deserve. From treatment during childhood to treatment in adolescence and adulthood, our orthodontist Dr. Bebe will take the time and care to recommend the best orthodontic treatment for your situation and lifestyle. If you bring your child into our San Antonio or Universal City office for an orthodontic evaluation, Dr. Bebe may recommend early orthodontic treatment.

Early Orthodontics in the San Antonio Area

Early orthodontic treatment takes place from ages 6 to 10. The intention of early treatment, or interceptive treatment as it’s also called, is to catch orthodontic problems in their primary stages and prevent them from becoming more advanced or worse. This will lessen the time the patient will need to spend in braces overall. Because a child’s jaw and mouth aren’t fully developed at the stage of early orthodontic treatment, any changes that need to be made to the bite will be easier to do at this stage rather than later in life.

Determining The Need For Early Orthodontic Treatment

In order to determine if early orthodontic treatment is necessary, Dr. Bebe recommends that you bring your child in for an evaluation by the age of 7. Our orthodontist may not begin treatment right away, but will monitor your child’s dental development to determine the right time to start orthodontic treatment.

In order to determine if your child needs early orthodontic treatment, Dr. Bebe will look for:

  • Overbite, underbite, or crossbite
  • Crowding, crooked, protruding teeth
  • Trouble chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Early or late loss of baby teeth (outside of ages 5 to 13)
  • Thumb-sucking past age 4 or 5

If Dr. Bebe determines that early orthodontic treatment is necessary, she can create an effective treatment plan that will yield results to last a lifetime. Some of the benefits of completing early orthodontic treatment are:<

  • Making space for crowded teeth
  • Influencing jaw growth to improve facial symmetry
  • Protecting protruding front teeth from injury
  • Keeping space open for adult teeth
  • Reducing overall orthodontic treatment time
