When To Take Your Child To An Orthodontist

Orthodontic treatment prepares your child for the future by helping him/her achieve and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile. While we work with patients of all ages to get straighter teeth, here at UC Smiles Orthodontics, starting your children early on their orthodontic treatment will give them an advantage in the long run. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontics recommends that your child see an orthodontist by the time they reach the age of seven.

Why Should My Child See An Orthodontist By Age Seven?

The reason age seven is so important for your child is because they are in a state of constant growth, and are coming up on a big milestone of their development: the eruption of their permanent teeth. By taking your child to see an orthodontist at this age, we can track their dental growth, predicting and preventing bite and jaw issues from developing by reacting to warning signs with orthodontic treatment. For example, an examination of the jaw can reveal that your child's jawbone is too small to house all their adult teeth, which could result in a tooth crowding bite issue. However, we can provide preventative treatment in the form of a palatal expander that will widen the jaw, allowing for the development of a more natural, comfortable bite, and preventing the crowding from ever happening.

While it is always an option for someone to receive orthodontic treatment at a later age, treatment may take longer and be more difficult since we would only be able to treat issues, not prevent them, while also losing the advantage of the body's natural and rapid growth rate at this age.

What Happens At Their First Orthodontic Appointment?

The first orthodontic appointment with us here at UC Smiles Orthodontics would just be a simple examination to assess your child's oral development, while they also get to know Dr. Bebe and our orthodontic team. The goal is to gain a better understanding of what your child needs in terms of treatment, which will come in the future, while making them feel as comfortable as possible and answering any questions they may have.

Signs That Your Kids Should See An Orthodontist

While the recommendation is to bring your kids to a UC Smiles Orthodontics office by the age of seven, you should probably schedule your child's appointment with us regardless of their age if you notice any of the following:

  • They lose their baby teeth early
  • They develop a habit of mouth breathing
  • Have difficulty with speaking or eating
  • Have bite issues with their teeth (crowding, misalignment, etc.)
  • Grind their teeth
  • Have a facial structure that seems off (misshapen jaw)

If you notice any of these things, or anything else that may seem strange in terms of their oral development, contact us to schedule an appointment right away.
